Starbucks, consume or invest?
During the week I saw an interesting, if somewhat unrealistic infomercial about Starbucks, consume or invest.
Person A
Buys coffee at Starbucks every day and consumes 4 dollars a day. This is equivalent to 80 dollars a month, or 960 dollars a year. Over 20 years, this person spends $19,200 at Starbucks.
Result
This person gets a caffeine boost from Starbucks every day, but pays almost $200,000 for it.
Person B
Buys shares in Starbucks every day and invests $4 a day. This is equivalent to 80 dollars a month, or 960 dollars a year. Over 20 years, this person spends $19,200 at Starbucks.
Result
This person earns $161,396 at Starbucks over 20 years and receives $229 per month in dividends.
I like the idea of starting to invest early. But the assumption of a 19% annual average return over 20 consecutive years is a bit optimistic. However, whoever wrote this is obviously right that it is a good strategy to start buying shares in the companies you like instead of their products.
