Home alone and inflation
“Home Alone” fans have been surprised by a staggering 264 percent increase in US food prices since the movie was released in 1990. Over the same period, the federal minimum wage has only increased by 90.78%. The federal minimum wage is currently $7.25 per hour and was $3.80 in 1990.
In 1990, when Home Alone was released, Kevin McCallister’s shopping list, a memorable part of the movie, amounted to $19.83, just over $200.
Fast forward to 2023, and the cost of the same item has skyrocketed to 72.28 USD, almost 760 SEK, clearly illustrating the 264% price increase over the years.
The items on Kevin McCallister’s shopping list included a pint of milk, a pint of orange juice, a TV dinner, bread, frozen mac and cheese, laundry detergent, plastic wrap, toilet paper, a package of toy soldiers, and dryer sheets.
