Niger increases uranium price from €0.8/kg to €200/kg
Niger increases the price of uranium from now on. Niger can quietly enjoy its uranium and carry out major projects for the country. France imposes its price on Niger before 1 kg of uranium is 4000 Fr (0.80 euro cents)
Uranium prices fuel Anti-French protest in Niger
Niger’s negotiations with French mining companies have turned into demands that threaten French energy security and heating needs. The new administration in Niger has increased the price of the uranium it exports. Niger provides 25% of the uranium consumed by Europe. The West African state has taken the bold step of increasing its uranium prices from €0.80 per kg to €200.00 per kg.
This is reminiscent of reports circulating in July, just after the coup d’état in which the military ousted the previous government, that the military junta had stopped the export of uranium. These rumors turned out to be false, and these seem impossible to be true. The spot market price for uranium is currently just over $56 per pound, well below what the Nigerian junta reportedly wants to charge.
Mining uranium since the 70s
France, the former colonial ruler of Niger, has been mining uranium in the African country since the 1970s. About three quarters of Niger’s uranium goes to France, and its former colonial power is still the main mining investor in the country through the French state-owned mining company Orano. Other mining players from China to Canada have entered Niger in the last two decades but France remains the dominant mining investor. The World Nuclear Association notes that investing in mines abroad is a strategy nations use to avoid paying market prices for minerals.
Even if the junta fails to get France to pay €200 per kilo for the uranium it extracts, it seems likely that the more influence France loses in Niger, the more it will have to pay for the country’s natural resources.
